Biden Administration Clarifies 1872 Mining Law; Says Thacker Pass Can Proceed
The Biden administration has completed a court-ordered review allowing construction to proceed at a lithium mine in Nevada, despite legal challenges from conservationists and tribal leaders. The Interior Department also announced plans to clarify mineral rights under the 1872 mining law to reflect modern realities. The moves come after the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals blocked a proposed copper mine in Arizona, signaling stricter interpretation of the mining law. The Thacker Pass lithium mine in Nevada, crucial for battery production in electric vehicles, is facing appeals from environmentalists and Native American tribes. The administration aims to expedite the transition to renewable energy sources as part of its clean energy agenda.
Chile Mines Minister Clarifies Controversial New Lithium Strategy
Chile's decision to tighten control over its lithium sector has raised speculation about the implications for the global industry. The country plans to adopt a state-led public-private model, including the creation of a national lithium company, but the move is still in the strategy stage and may take years to become a public policy. The new strategy aims to add value to the lithium industry by promoting technology transfer and worker training. Around 50 interested parties, including companies from China and Canada, have expressed interest in participating in Chile's lithium sector. The long-term plan involves consolidating oversight under a state-run lithium company.
Copper Rebounds on Optimism over US Debt Talks
Copper prices rebounded on hopes of a U.S. debt deal, with investors adjusting positions. Three-month copper on the LME rose 1% to $8,254.50/tonne. Positive talks between Democrats and Republicans boosted wider financial markets. Weak Chinese demand and a strong U.S. dollar pose challenges for the copper market.
Making Mines Intelligent
China has issued guidelines to develop intelligent coal mines using technologies like 5G, AI, and cloud computing. Huawei and Shaanxi Coal have collaborated to create an industrial internet platform that improves efficiency, safety, and collaboration in mining operations. The adoption of intelligent mining practices has resulted in reduced workforce, increased productivity, and improved decision-making based on data analysis. The success of this collaboration serves as a reference for the global mining industry, and Huawei plans to continue working with mining companies to promote smart mines internationally.
