What Green Energy Transition? Half Of Mining Industry Still Exploring Gold
According to a new study by S&P Global Market Intelligence, overall mining exploration budgets fell 3% this year to $12.8 billion, the first decline since 2020. Gold exploration budgets dropped 16% or $1.1 billion to $6 billion, representing 46% of the total spend. This decline was largely driven by junior mining companies struggling to raise capital. While spending on battery metals like lithium, nickel and copper increased, it was not enough to offset the reduction in gold exploration. Lithium budgets almost doubled to become the third most explored commodity. There was also a significant increase in uranium and rare earth exploration budgets thanks to higher prices. Despite the focus on energy transition metals, gold still dominates exploration spending, highlighting its continued importance for the mining industry.
Thesis Research Survey: Standardization Of Responsible And Sustainable Mining Practices
The focus of the thesis is to understand the necessity of standardizing different guidelines and how governments can play a pivotal role in streamlining these directives.
Science North And CIM Launch Digital Mining Game Across Canada
Science North and the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum have collaborated to create a new digital game called Mine Evolution that allows youth to explore modern, sustainable mining practices in Canada. The game developed by D&D Skunkworks takes players through building and upgrading a virtual mine while implementing renewable energy sources and following proper procedures. Mine Evolution aims to increase awareness of mining's essential role in society and the variety of career opportunities available. Complementary educational resources have also been developed. The free game available in English and French can be played on computers and mobile devices without an internet connection. Science North and CIM hope the game highlights mining's importance to Canada's green future.
⚒️ Mining Data Digest Snapshot
Summary:
The Virginia silver project located in Santa Cruz, Argentina is owned by Mirasol Resources. It contains epithermal vein deposits that have been explored through surface sampling, trenching, drilling, and preliminary metallurgical tests. As of October 2023, the project contains indicated and inferred resources of 19.5 million ounces of silver. Additional drilling and engineering studies are recommended to expand resources and advance the project.
