On the Rocks Podcast: Artisanal Mining Featuring Hugh Brown

Prospector's founder Emily King sat down with Hugh Brown, a best-selling author and photographer, to discuss artisanal miners in the developing world.

On this week's On the Rocks podcast, Prospector's founder Emily King sat down with Hugh Brown, a best-selling author and photographer, to discuss artisanal miners in the developing world, and how the future of the mining industry may effect them.

In 2007, Hugh started photographing the work and lives of artisanal miners around the world. This project quickly turned into a passion, and he started beginning to encourage people to think about how process driven large scale mining will effect small scale miners.

"One of the major challenges we have in artisanal mining, and probably the major challenge, is there's a lack of alignment of objective and because we have so many different interest groups and so many different competing objectives there's no alignment there. So if we aren't getting alignment on the ground how are we going to achieve meaningful change for the people we are purporting to help"

"I hope that through my work I can educate people, and ultimately bring about change in the sector, and the change I want to bring about is that if we are going to impose change on these people then we need to have a plan in place for what happens next"
