The TSX and the TSX Venture are home to ~43% of the world’s publicly-listed mining companies and each company is either mining the metals or minerals we need or looking for the next generation of deposits we need. Using data from the exchanges reveals the patterns of the mining industry.
Prospector’s database comprises over 4,900 technical reports tagged by metal(s). Overall, the reports show 9,000 tags of specific metals (including those attributable to polymetallic deposits). Using this data, we can see what metals are the most common on the TSX and TSX Venture.
Out of the top 20 metals, gold leads the pack with 3,165 tags (32.37%), silver is in second with 1,440 tags (14.73%), copper ranks third with 1,412 tags (14.44%), and zinc landing fourth with 697 tags (7.13%).
These reports cover the past decade of the mining industry but with a new emphasis on mining for materials used in renewable technologies, such as cobalt (1.64%), rare earth elements (0.85%), lithium (1.73%), graphite (0.56%) and nickel (2.43%), these could become more common on the TSX and TSX Venture in the near future.
