Biden Administration Clarifies 1872 Mining Law; Says Thacker Pass Can Proceed

The Biden administration has completed a court-ordered review allowing construction to proceed at a lithium mine in Nevada, despite legal challenges from conservationists and tribal leaders. The Interior Department also announced plans to clarify mineral rights under the 1872 mining law to reflect modern realities. The moves come after the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals blocked a proposed copper mine in Arizona, signaling stricter interpretation of the mining law. The Thacker Pass lithium mine in Nevada, crucial for battery production in electric vehicles, is facing appeals from environmentalists and Native American tribes. The administration aims to expedite the transition to renewable energy sources as part of its clean energy agenda.

Chile Mines Minister Clarifies Controversial New Lithium Strategy

Chile's decision to tighten control over its lithium sector has raised speculation about the implications for the global industry. The country plans to adopt a state-led public-private model, including the creation of a national lithium company, but the move is still in the strategy stage and may take years to become a public policy.
